Pharyngitis disease, which is suffered by probably all people for at least once throughout their life, is the bacterial or viral inflammation which occurs in the back of the throat (pharynx). There are two types of pharyngitis; one is acute and the other is chronic. Chronic pharyngitis usually begins as a sore throat or with the feel of a foreign object in your throat.
Chronic pharyngitis, which most people know as simply sore throat usually, needs a longer period of time to heal when compared to acute pharyngitis. The symptoms, some of which are dryness, burning and lingering discomfort or scratchiness in the throat, difficulty in swallowing, and an irritating cough, are mostly about throat.
When you have a sore throat, you may prefer resting at home and self-treating yourself with herbs such as thyme, licorice, marshmallow root, chamomile tea, or sage. Yet, there is always a possibility that something more serious may cause your disease. Therefore it is wiser to see a doctor and be sure. Diagnosis of pharyngitis is easy. If you suffer from one of the symptoms above, you should see an otorhinolaryngologist (ear, nose & throat doctor). In order to diagnose the disease, your doctor will conduct a physical exam and listen to your sufferings. In the physical exam, the doctor will check out the following:
- Airway clearance
- Hydration level
- Body temperature
- Throat, nose and ears
- Other parts in the head
- Abdomen and intestines
- Lymph nodes
However, the doctor sometimes cannot be sure about the causes of the disease. In such cases, they may want to look into your blood sample and throat culture.
Always remember that in order for the diagnosis and treatment to be simpler, you should have seriously long lasting sore throats examined on time.
