Pharyngitis in Pets

Pharyngitis in pets, as in humans, is manifested by inflammation of the mucous membrane of the pharynx. The course of the disease can be acute and chronic, and by origin – primary and secondary. The most common causes of the disease are the same as stomatitis, but the main cause is hypothermia, which can occur as a result of swimming in cold water, swallowing snow, drinking cold water. Most often, the disease is recorded among horses, cattle and dogs.

The most characteristic and early sign of pharyngitis disease is the disorder of the swallowing act, the stretching of the head and neck. Disturbance of appetite in animals may not be, however, with severe pharyngitis, animal feed is not swallowed, and it is thrown away, including through the nasopharynx.

The general condition of animals is slightly depressed, and sometimes body temperature may increase. Also, there are empty swallowing movements, drooling and coughing, difficulty in swallowing (the water that the animal has absorbed into the mouth is poured out through the mouth or nose). Also, the animal manifests soreness of the pharynx during palpation, its mucosa is red, edematous, sometimes covered with a mucus-purulent coating of dirty yellow color, in some cases there are small ulcers, as well as inflammation of the tonsils and lymph nodes, sometimes with the formation of abscesses. Develops shortness of breath and attacks of suffocation in the animal. In severe disease, fever occurs, vomiting occurs in animals, a fetid smell is released from the mouth.

In cases without complications the condition of the animals after 2-3 days gradually improves, and after 1.5 – 2 weeks they usually recover. Usually in the treatment create optimal conditions for keeping and feeding sick animals. They are given a warm liquid food. In the case of severe pharyngitis in dogs or cats, veterinarians make a nutritional dropper.
