Epiglottitis is a disease that is the result of epiglottis inflammation. Epiglottitis is a disease caused by the bacterium Haemophilus influenza and this disease is a vital danger when it occurs in children. This disease can also happen when children breathe in hot stream or smoke from a fire .This disease is usually seen in children between the ages of 2 and 7 years.
What Are The Symptoms of Epiglottitis?
This disease has many symptoms. High fever, saliva accumulation in the mouth, muffled voice and sore throat are common symptoms of epiglottitis. More severe symptoms are seen when the disease is not noticed in children. Difficulty breathing or breathing faster than usual, unable to talk and drooling are the next symptoms in that disease. How to Treat Epiglottitis?
Some tests are performed at the hospital for diagnosis. These tests are blood tests, blood culture, throat culture, X-ray of the neck and visualization of the airway. Treatment process begins after clinical diagnosis.
Antibiotic treatment is performed in case of early diagnosis. The most important point in treatment is keeping open to the airway. Interventions such as intubation and tracheostomy can be performed in case of respiratory problem. Cold steam may be given to child at the hospital. The drug called cortisone can also be given to the child. Acute epiglottis effect may occur if early intervention is not performed.
