What Is Adenoid?

Adenoid is a shaped like a bunch of grapes and placed in between the nose and throat. Adenoid helps to fight against microbes, bacteria and viruses that enter the nose of microbes and to produce antibodies for body. If your child has constant or frequent recurring nasopharyngeal or inflammation, your doctor may recommend that the adenoid is removed surgically. Children do not get sick more often after their adenoid is taken; because other tissues that function like adenoid in the body can do the same functions adequately.

What are the symptoms of the enlarged or infected adenoid?

Several symptoms can be seen if the adenoid enlarges. Your child may have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty in breathing

  • Continuous breathing through the mouth

  • Speak through the nose or gutturally

  • Snuffle

  • Snoring during sleep

  • Hold your breath for a few seconds during sleep (sleep apnea)

If you suspect that your child is growing or having inflammation in your child, consult your doctor.

How is the treatment of your enlarged adenoid?

Your doctor can try to treat your child first with antibiotics. If adenoid is not inflamed, your doctor may suggest that you wait a while, because it is normal for children to grow a little bit. Over time, your child's adenoid can shrink itself.

In which situations is the operation decided?

  • Difficulty in breathing

What happens during adenoidectomy?

Your child will be slept by giving general anesthesia. This means that the surgery will be performed in an operating room and your child will be monitored by an anesthesiologist during surgery. Your child will sleep for about 20 minutes. The surgeon will take adenoid into your child's mouth. There is no need to make a deep cut for adenoidectomy.
